Our History

At AADFC, we believe deeply in the power of community. We strive to create a true “village away from home”, a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment where individuals and families from diverse African and African Descent nations and backgrounds can gather to share experiences, celebrate culture, and preserve their heritage. Our programs and activities are designed to strengthen relationships, promote cultural exchange, and foster meaningful friendships and networks.

As a grassroots organization, we take pride in uplifting the diverse cultures, languages, histories, and traditions of Africans and African descendants. We actively support our members through community building initiatives, social and cultural events, volunteer opportunities, and programs that empower both adults and youth. In addition, we work collaboratively with local partners, organizations, and residents to promote cross-cultural engagement and contribute positively to the broader St. Albert community.

The Africans & African Descendant Friendship Club of St. Albert (AADFC) was founded in 2019 by Helen Agbonison, who recognized the need for a dedicated space where individuals of African heritage in St. Albert could connect, belong, and thrive. What began as a small community initiative has grown into a vibrant and inclusive organization committed to supporting people of African descent, whether they are newcomers, long-standing residents, or allies who share our vision for multicultural unity and understanding.

AADFC is a registered non-profit organization with the Alberta Corporate Registry, committed to transparency, inclusivity, and long-term community development. Through our collective efforts, we aim to build a legacy that honours our roots, celebrates our diversity, and inspires future generations.
